Scope And Content
Depicts the Eleftherias (Ελευθερίας) Square (previously named Plateia Olympou (Ολυμπου) until 1908 and before that Plateia Apovathras (Αποβαθρας)). On the right side of the main street in the photo (Venizelos Street) is Café Crystal (καφεζυθοπωλειο κρυσταλ), later Café Poseidon (καφε Ποσειδων), which were at the bottom of the Grand Hotel d’Anglaterre (Μεγαλο Ξεωοδοχειο της Αγγλιας). That Café Crystal was known to be the gathering place for the ‘Liberal Club’ associated with Venizelos’ Liberal Party. On the left side of the main street is the corner of the first building of the Hotel Olympos (Palace) and the building next to it was the Hotel Rome, the bottom of which housed the then famous Café Flokas (Φλοκας) known to many foreigners and probably the destination of Winifred Lamb. Handwritten captions under photograph: “Flokas” on left and “P.O.” on right. At the top right corner of the page is written “March 18-22”
